Chapter Twelve
Katie smoothed her hands down the front of her dress as she stepped over the threshold into Lawsonâs house. She could do this. She could totally do this. If she didnât throw up from nerves first.
She clasped her hands in front of her, taking a minute to study the homey looking kitchen. It didnât look like it had changed much since his grandparents had lived here. Blue ceramic ducks and pictures of flowers decorated the windowsills and walls. Not exactly the masculine decor of three men sharing a house.
He cleared his throat, standing awkwardly by the refrigerator. âDo you want a drink? I mean, not a drink drink. Like a pop or coffee or something?â
It was a little puncture in the balloon of excitement that had been inflating in her chest. âAre you always going to do that when it comes to alcohol?â
âHonestly?â He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. âI donât know.â
She liked the honesty in that answer, and how could she blame him? Alcohol would always be that little black cloud hanging over most social interactions. Well, she didnât need alcohol for this night to end well. âYou donât have to. I can handle it. I can turn down a drink. Iâm getting better at it. Every day.â She took a step toward him. Then another. Because she was. Stronger every day, and she deserved a reward.
âRight.â
The way his nerves mirrored her own was enough to make her relax, enough to put a palm to his chest when she got close enough. He looked handsome in the untucked white shirt and black pants, the suit jacket heâd worn during the ceremony discarded long ago. Disheveled elegance.
He may not have fit in the Hollywood world theyâd lived in, but heâd always been able to look the part. She didnât want to think about that though. She pushed up onto her toes and kissed him.
His arms went around her waist, pulling her closer. His lips did wonderful things to hers, light brushes followed by more insistent pressure, his hands traveling down to the curve of her butt.
She rifled her hands through his hair, the soft texture like heaven against her palms. God, it had been so, so long since someone had touched her like this, made her feel like this. Hot and needy for any attention he was willing to give her body.
Her hands trailed down his neck, followed the line of his jaw, taking in the two spots heâd missed shaving, trying to memorize the texture of his skin, the warmth of his mouth, the feeling of his erection and long, rangy body pressed against hers.
She focused on keeping her hands steady as she unbuttoned his shirt, and he worked on the little buttons on the top of her dress. She could have told him that it was supposed to zip in the back and these buttons were for decoration, but she liked his hands there, brushing against her breasts, causing lovely trails of heat to meander through her body.
